It is something that, being human, you have probably done, used to do, or still do today. You may be doing it with total confidence that it is ok in the eyes of God. Or you may be doing it with an utter lack of confidence, consumed with continual regret. You may even be doing it reluctantly, struggling with constant guilt, wanting to stop and finding yourself unable to do so.

I am not talking about the very human temptation to reach for that extra piece of delicious chocolate cake, or that plate of crunchy, golden brown french fries, as conflicted as each of us might be about our dietary decisions, and as much of a struggle it can be to consistently make the right healthy choices. No, the thing about which I am speaking is much more private than that. It is something that is normally not spoken of in polite society. The thing about which I am speaking, and inviting you to think is, well, the M word. (You know what I mean.)

Embarrassment

It may be that no word evokes more embarrassment as does this one. For sure over the centuries of Christian history, no other practice has generated as much condemnation, and controversy. From the early days of the Christian church eminent theologians have made their profound pronouncements, most often in words of strong warning and condemnation. From the ancient Church fathers to the Protestant reformers like Wesley, Calvin, and many others, up to the dogmas found in some churches today, they all expressed their opinion.

But I suggest to you that it is time to push past the ideas and opinions of ancient and modern divines and freshly examine what the Word of God really says about this nearly universal human practice. Yes, it has been much spoken against, but it would be good to examine their reasons why, especially since most of them admit that it is condemned nowhere in the Word of God. After all, their condemnations have had a very strong effect. And just why does this simple biological act, that in reality seems to hurt no one, sometimes carry with it such a load of shame and guilt?

So, it would be good to examine it in the clear light of Scripture and logic. It would be good to look at as objectively as we can, and see what is right or wrong about the practice. It would be good to do all of this, but not here.

Second Reason

This brings me to the second reason for this website. This website exists to not just introduce a sensitive, controversial, and sometimes difficult topic, but to invite you to join me in doing some fresh thinking it, and do that thinking on the Christians and Solo Sex (C.A.S.S.) website where I take an in depth look at the M word from a fresh, positive, Biblical perspective.

It may seem like an unusual decision to do a website to introduce another website, but almost anyone in the Christian community will agree that this really is an extremely sensitive subject, one that merits being approached with caution. In fact, the very idea of going any further may make you nervous. You may be concerned that this is nothing more than an invitation to somehow become contaminated by sexual indiscretion. I assure you it is not. Instead, it is an invitation to see what the Word of God really says, and to perhaps experience more freedom in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 5:1

The theme scripture for both this and the C.A.S.S. website is Galatians 5:1.

Stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and be not entangled again in a yoke of bondage.

No sincere Christian wants to be entangled in bondage to sin of any kind. We have all known its devastating effects, and how it interferes with our relationship with God, to say nothing of our personal happiness.

But neither do we want to be ensnared in unnecessary and unbiblical restrictions on our belief and behaviour. If God s word condemns something as sin, we need to take it very seriously. But if it does not, we need to be willing to see what it really says. As the ancient philosopher Socrates said,

The unexamined life is not worth living.

Well, it could also be said that an unexamined theology or belief is not worth believing. How sad it would be to be delivered from the yoke of bondage called sin, only to be ensnared in unnecessary religious rules and restrictions that have no foundation in the Word of God. This was the problem Jesus addressed over and over again in the Gospels. In the strongest language He ever used He soundly rebuked the religious leaders of his day for putting burdens on people they did not need to bear.

Sections

So, I understand that you may want to proceed with caution. Because of this I have prepared a more complete descriptions of the each section of the C.A.S.S. website. Each page listed at the top of this introductory article (and in the links listed below) looks briefly at a different section of the that website.

C.A.S.S. Homepage. I have studied much, thought much, and prayed much about this subject over the past few years. In so doing I developed a Theology of Solo Sex. I share that Theology, as well as a number of general articles you may find interesting.

Meditations. Believe it or not, I have also written a number of short devotional Meditations on the topic. Imagine, meditations on the M word. Surely you are intrigued!

Scripture. Since the Word of God is the most important light to our path it is vitally important we examine the different Scriptures people most often use in discussing this topic.

History. A look at opinions and ideas from ancient history to present time, examining where they came from, and their impact.
